Assemblymember Price Praises Special
Olympics
More than 2.25 million participants from 160
countries
Assemblymember Curren
Price praised the efforts of the athletes
and volunteers helping out on Special
Olympics Day, which is celebrated on July 20th.
He called the Special Olympics “an event
that provides hope, acceptance, dignity and
courage to thousands of Special Olympics
athletes around the world.”
On July 20th, Eunice Kennedy Shriver started
a day camp in her backyard with a series of
activities for those with intellectual
disabilities. In 1968, again on July 20th,
with the support of the Chicago Park
District, she opened the first Special
Olympics with events in track, aquatics and
floor hockey.
Today, there are over 2.25 million
individuals participating in Special Olympic
programs in over 160 countries. They
participate in sports of every kind in
programs that have been tested and developed
in a Sports Skills Guide for each sport. By
assigning more than 140,000 qualified
coaches to train Special Olympic athletes,
Special Olympics gives every participant a
reasonable chance to win. But what is really
important and what they focus on is the
attempt which is pointed out in their motto:
“Let me win. But if I do not win, let me be
brave in the attempt.”
“Special Olympic athletes are an inspiration
to us all in every walk of life. The
determination and sense of self-esteem
demonstrated by the participants is
always a wonderful experience,” Assemblymember Price stated.
If you would like to know more about Special
Olympics, please contact the District office
at 310.412.6400.

Legislative Watch
Price Introduces
AB 1211 & AB 1732
Both bills signed into Law by the Governor
AB 1211:: AB 1211 provides that the costs of all services or
products provided by the deposition officer or entity providing the
deposition services ordered or requested by a party's attorney, a deponent's
attorney, or a party representing himself or herself, shall be the
responsibility of that attorney or party, except if otherwise provided by
law or pursuant to an agreement, as specified. This bill simply asks
attorneys who order services to be responsible for paying for the
deposition serves they have ordered from the reporting professionals.
AB 1732:: AB 1732 is an Assembly Elections & Redistricting Committee
omnibus bill, contains three provisions requested by local elections
officials to help streamline and clarify elections procedures. First, AB
1732 clarifies that a governing board of a governmental body cannot serve as
the elections official for its elections. This provision eliminates
confusion and helps avoid a conflict that could be created if a governing
board seeks to assume the authority of conducting elections from the person
who is properly charged with that duty. Second, AB 1732 ensures that
proponents of a city referendum have a sufficient
amount of time to circulate referendum petitions by specifying that
time period to collect signatures begins when the adopted ordinance is
finalized. Under current law, the time period to collect referendum
signatures begins on the date the ordinance is adopted, which can cut down
on the time that referendum proponents have to circulate petitions if the
final copy of the ordinance is not immediately available. Finally, AB 1732
prohibits candidate statements by candidates for local nonpartisan office
from referencing other candidates for that office.
Flash! AB 1598 was approved off the Assembly Floor and is going to the
Governor’s Desk for his signature or veto. The bill received an unofficial
vote of 77 to 0.

these and other bills please visit the state website.
